Well, LEGO has done it again. They’ve created yet another highly detailed car set for us adult collectors. This time, it’s the No. 51 Ferrari 488 GTE campaigned in the 2018-19 World Endurance Championship by AF Corse driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi, Daniel Serra, and James Calado. Of course, it’s also the same car/team/driver pairing that won the GTE class at the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans.
A Detailed Model for Your Desk or Bookshelf
This car isn’t one of the smaller sets from its Speed Champions line. No, this car is part of the Technic family, which means it’s much bigger, more technical, and more detailed. While a Speed Champions set is around 200 pieces, this behemoth is over 1,600 pieces. As a result, the model measures over 5 inches high, 19 inches long, and 8.5 inches wide.
And don’t mistake this model for kids, either. The recommended age to build is 18+ and trust us, these sets can be pretty complex for most adults.
The Lego 488 GTE features front and rear suspension, opening doors, its V8 engine (complete with moving pistons) and a steering wheel that actually works. The car is also littered with stickers (get your patience ready) to create the iconic Tricolore livery and sponsors the real-life racecar exhibits.
Ferrari & Lego: Over 15 Years of Awesome Sets
For over 15 years, Ferrari and LEGO have collaborated to bring it’s F1 cars, road cars, and Le Mans cars to enthusiasts young and old. But this set marks the first Technic model that LEGO has worked with Ferrari on. Even driver Pier Guidi got a quote in the LEGO press release:
“When I was a kid I played quite often with LEGO bricks, so when I saw this reproduction of the Ferrari 488 GTE I was really impressed, especially considering some of the features they managed to replicate. I have to say that to see a LEGO Technic model of a car that I raced and carried my name on has made me very proud.”
The set is priced on par with other LEGO sets at around 10 cents a piece, meaning this model costs $169.99. It releases January 1, 2021. So, if you’ve got some extra money from the holidays, we know how you can blow it.
