Ah, yes. The iconic ampersand or “&” shirt. These kind of shirts got their start in Amsterdam circa 2001, when a clever designed incorporated the Beatles names (John & Paul & George & Ringo). These days, the ampersand shirt has achieved cult status and is used to reference just about everything. And now, thanks to Harlo at the Chicane Blog, they reference famous drivers from three different decades of Formula One.
Drivers from the 50s, 60s, & 70s
The 50s F1 ampersand shirt is in a rich burgundy red (think the mighty Alfas, Maseratis and Ferraris at the time), and features the names of Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, and Sir Stirling Moss.
The 60s F1 ampersand shirt (my personal favorite) displays the names of Hill (Graham or Phil – you decide), Jack Brabham, Dan Gurney, and Jim Clark. What a group!
And finally, the 70s F1 ampersand shirt uses the names of Mario Andretti, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, and James Hunt. I would’ve maybe subbed Andretti for Fittipaldi, given Emmo’s two world championships during that era, but it’s still a lovely shirt.
Each shirt costs around $25 shipped, so it’s affordably priced when it comes to motorsport apparel.
Idea: 80s, 90s, 00, 10s F1 Ampersand Shirts
I’d love to see Harlo make one for the remaining decades. Here’s what I’m thinking:
- 80s: Prost & Senna & Piquet & Mansell
- 90s: Schumacher & Hakkinen & Hill & Villeneuve
- 00s: Schumacher & Alonso & Hamilton & Raikkonen
- 10s: Hamilton & Vettel & Rosberg & Verstappen
Sure, there’s some overlap with Schumacher and Hamilton, but when you’re dealing with 7-time world champions with success in two decades, it’s bound to happen.
If you haven’t visited the Chicane Blog, give them a visit. They’re one of my personal favorites. And to pick up one of these shirts, visit the Etsy shop by clicking the button below. There’s some other cool shirts on there too, which will likely get their own spotlight here one of these days.
